Start to heal and move forward
When parents separate for whatever reason, their roles and relationships with their children change, especially if they were an intact family prior to the separation. When this happens, regardless of how old the children are, parents become under the watchful eyes of their children. In other words, children will scope out (look at especially for the purpose of evaluation) their parents. How parents communicate with each other and behave towards one another will role model what is normal to the child. This series of sessions will help parents to create a new normal for their children, that includes respectful communication, addressing children’s behaviors associated with change, and taking accountability for the hurt caused to each other in hopes that all family members will start to heal and move forward positively on to their new lives.
Parents will participate in six sessions together to gain skills on how to move forward in co-parenting. Sessions are 50 minutes each and will offer activities, practice opportunities and homework. A workbook will be provided to each parent. The focus of the sessions are as follows:
New Normal
Parents will create co-parenting goals and what they would like their relationship with their child(ren) to look like.
Need to Know
Parents will learn boundary setting and what information is appropriate for each other to have and what information should be shared with the child(ren).
Be Heard Part I
Parents will learn skills to communicate in a way that each other feel heard.
Be Heard Part II
Parents will learn skills to provide space for children to share their thoughts. They will also learn to communicate to encourage and support them to change unwanted behaviors.
Accountability
Parents will participate in a restorative process to repair the hurt caused by their behavior and/or their separation/divorce.
Avoid, Interrupt & Escape Old Habits
Parents will develop a plan to continue to use the skills learned and what to do when old habits creep up.
Fee: $1500 ($750 each parent) includes initial individual session with each parent.
These sessions are for the two parents of the children. Services, such as counseling can be offered to step-parents or significant others either individually or as couples outside of the SCOPES sessions.
